The Best Warm Ham and Cheese Sandwiches Ever

I actually don't like ham and rarely eat sandwiches but these warm ham and cheese sandwiches are so good!

They are warm with melty cheese but the honey and Worcestershire sauce makes them both sweet and tangy too. The melted butter gets cooked into the bread making the bottom of the rolls just a bit crispy. I'm telling you they are so delicious.

My boys were so thrilled we had leftover ham and began asking me to make these sandwiches again. I just knew I had to try and share this recipe with you but other than the "topping" I pour over them I don't really measure any of the other ingredients. So I'll do my best but use your own judgement. I honestly don't think you can mess them up.

Ingredients:

For the sandwiches:

A package of sandwich rolls; your favorite kind

1/4 cup or so of mayonnaise

1 Tablespoon or so of yellow mustard

I'd guess close to a pound of leftover, cooked (or deli) ham (though I think other meats would be great too)

1-2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese

For the topping:

1/4 cup melted butter

1 Tablespoon honey

1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce

1/2 Tablespoon dried mixed onion

To make:

Preheat oven to 350 and begin making your sandwiches.

I like to prepare the sandwiches in a deep dish but you really just need something with a rim. I find 4 rolls fit perfectly in my 8x8 pans so I used two of those to make all 8 sandwiches.

I took the tops off and spread the bottom of each sandwich with a light layer of mayo.

I then piled on ham; the first time I made them I used one slice on each and we found that just wasn't enough filling to make these sandwiches feel substantial enough for our dinners. So this time I put a few layers on each.

I then topped them with shredded cheddar cheese (Swiss would be great too but my family isn't a fan of Swiss cheese)

I gave a good quirt of mustard to each sandwich then put the tops back on. Evan did tell me he preferred when I mixed the mustard into the mayo last time since he didn't like that the mustard was "clumpy" so again; you do what you think is best. I happened to like it this way.

Then I set about making the "topping." In a container I mixed together the melted butter, honey, Worcestershire sauce, and dried onion. Try to divide it somewhat evenly between all the sandwiches; pouring it right over the tops of them.

It's okay that some will slide down the sides and gather in the bottom of the pan.

Cover them with foil and bake 10-15 minutes until all the cheese is melted and the rolls are a nice golden brown. I often remove the foil for the last couple of minutes.

They are best served warm right out of the oven.

See how the bottom of the rolls get a bit browned and crisp?

I plan to make a huge tray of these for our next party/function. I think they'd be a huge hit at summer cookouts too!

  1. Looks yummy- The sesame bun was a good option with the seeds getting toasty in the oven. The recipe reminds me a little of ham and cheese sliders that are popular around here at parties. It's a similar concept but the buns are the Hawaiian rolls that you cut in half to make a bun. There's a buttery mixture that gets poured on top and baked. I like your recipe makes full size sandwiches for a meal. Thanks for sharing your recipe!

    1. Thanks! I often modify slider recipes to full size to make a meal out of them since we so rarely entertain anymore.

  5. These do look so yummy! The larger buns (with sesame seeds... yum!) make so much sense, especially when serving as a main course! I can see why they are a family favorite - your photos have me licking my lips!

  7. Yum! What a great sandwich, pinning this for later! PS love how you put the mustard on! Mustard can be a fickle condiment, too much is not good, and yet, too little is also not good!

  17. These look delicious! I wonder if they would work with chicken. I guess it would be interesting to try! The honey sounds really good with ham, but I'm not sure about chicken. Maybe BBQ sauce?

    1. I think this recipe would work great with chicken or even turkey! I don't think you'd notice the honey much since it's such a small amount; but subbing out BBQ would definitely work too.
