10 on the 10th... on the 8th

Since the 10th falls on a Sunday this month (and I don't blog on the weekends) I thought I'd share my 10 on the 10th a bit early. I love that it also coincides with Friday Favorites since Marsha's 10 on the 10th is often one of my favorite prompts to answer.

Rather than asking us specific questions this month, Marsha has asked us to share 10 things we like to do or eat in November. I thought I'd actually share 10 of each! Now not everything on my list is something we only like to do or eat in November-- we hike pretty much year round and you better believe that many of our favorite foods are enjoyed throughout the fall/winter season too but I'm sure you won't mind me taking a bit of a creative license with the prompt.

10 Things I like to DO in November:

  • Hiking, of course! Though November isn't as pretty for hiking up here it's still not icy and snowy yet so we get out hiking at least once a week. Typically we need coats, gloves, and hats this time of year and while that does take some of the enjoyment away at least we're still getting fresh air and exercise.

  • Putting together puzzles-- when fall rolls around and we're spending more time inside I like to break out the puzzles again and try to always have one going.

  • Reading! While I love reading year round there is something so perfect about curling up with a good book, a blanket, and either some cocoa or a roaring fire (or both!) that makes me feel so cozy.
  • Make a Thankful list of some sort-- this year I've turned my sentence a day post to list one thing I'm thankful/grateful for each day.
  • Decorate for Christmas-- typically we decorate our house for Christmas the day after Thanksgiving.

  • Bake/cook cozy favorites-- I'll go into more detail about the foods we eat below but once the weather turns cooler I do find that I spent more time in the kitchen baking and cooking up casseroles and comfort foods.
  • Send out my Christmas Cards-- I typically try to have them all addressed and ready to drop in the mail the day after Thanksgiving. I've been told many times that my card is the first most of our friends and family receive.
I've already got my cards all made and I just need to work on getting them addressed..

  • Host Thanksgiving dinner. I think it's just going to the 5 of us this year and maybe we can talk my mother in law into joining us too but it should be real quiet and real relaxed this year.
  • Craft/paint/scrapbook-- again, since we're home more and inside more I tend to use the extra time to paint, craft, scrapbook or even tackle redecorating a room.

10 Things I like to EAT in November:

  • Our "leftover pie" that I look forward to even more than our actual Thanksgiving dinner.

  • Fresh bread-- we rarely cook up the same bread recipe twice but we love trying out new ones!

  9. I also love puzzles and reading in November! Such a cozy vibe. I am on my feet all day working at my carpet cleaning company so it is nice to come home and have a puzzle going to relax. Paired with a warm cup of tea is the perfect evening!

  10. What a fun and cozy list! I love how you’ve shared a mix of activities and foods that make November special for you. Hiking is such a great way to embrace the season, even when it’s a bit chillier. Puzzles are such a perfect indoor activity when the weather starts to cool, too. It sounds like you're making the most of November’s cozy vibes, with a great balance of outdoor and indoor activities.

  12. Fall and food, two of my favorite topics and photographs. You bake such lovely looking delicacies. :) Yum!

  13. Your food photos are making me drool Joanne. I love leftovers. I make a similar pie to yours with the after Christmas leftovers. I can almost smell the bread in your photo. We don't eat much bread, but I've been thinking of baking a loaf each week. When my daughter was a teenager Sunday was bread baking day, and I loved it. Thanks for bringing back the memory.

  19. Dear Joanne, the first photo with the red leaves, which actually look almost rosy, is fantastically beautiful, it would be perfect as a large wall picture!
I am amazed that you put up the Christmas tree so early. In our country, this traditionally only happens on December 24th. The presents are also given out on the evening of the 24th and the tree usually stays up until January 6th (Epiphany), in some regions even until Candlemas (do you know that in the USA? It is a Christian holiday here that takes place on February 2nd).
I would like to thank you very much for the wonderful comments you left on my blog. It is exciting that you could also feel the NYC earthquake! I think it was felt more strongly in houses than in Central Park, where we were at the time... Luckily nothing bad happened.
Funny that your son is such a Forrest Gump fan. For us, it's because our love story began when we went to the cinema together in 1995 :-) In San Francisco, the waiter also came to us with trivia questions from the movie and I think we managed all of them :-) It's definitely a fun idea to use the film as an opportunity to visit the original locations (for us, it was more of a coincidence... but a great one!)
All the best from Austria, Traude

    1. Aw, thank you. It was so surprising to walk around the corner and see all those pinkish/red leaves since pretty much all the other trees are now bare. We usually put our tree up so early since I almost always take it down on the 26th of December and I love all the twinkling lights (plus now that we have all fake trees I don't have to worry about them drying out). My mother leaves her tree up until the Epiphany but I had not heard of Candlemas.

  21. I considered putting hiking on my list but with the shorter days and working, it just isn't something we do other than on weekends. So much yummy food on your list, and everything in the photos looks delicious! Checking out a couple of the recipes, since pecan pie is a favorite of mine and I'm interested in different ways to fix squash. Hope your November is wonderful!
