Not Just A Mom-- My Pet Peeves

It's time for another Not Just A Mom link up and today we're talking about some of our pet peeves.  Oh boy, do I ever have so many!! I'm sure I'll forget 1/2 of them... but I'll list all those I can think of.

I hope you'll join us this month (or next time!)! It's always the 2nd Monday of the month.

I put off typing this post for as long as I could.. mostly because I think I didn't want to admit just how much I nit pick everything.  I know I often come across in my blog as very go with the flow (and that is a REAL portrayal of what I have been working on for years and years-- pretty much since the moment we had kids and perfection had to go out the window).

BUT while I may not voice them out loud very often I still find so many little thing drive me up the wall.  I have gotten much better at realizing I don't need to tell my family or sigh or jump up and intervene so much as live with that *ugh!* feeling in my head and then just breathe in and let it go.

But these are the things that make me grit my teeth...

Around the house/ with family & friends:
  • When someone leaves a near empty (or completely empty!) box of food/ jar of juice in the fridge.
  • When anyone tracks in dirt/sand/mud on the very same day I just cleaned whatever area they are now getting dirty again.
  • When people in our house don't load the dishwasher the right (by which I mean MY) way... and then the dishes don't come out clean and we have to put so many dirty dishes back through.
  • That no one in the house can find anything without first asking me where it is (now, in all fairness there are times they leave things hanging around and I put them away where I think they should be and not necessarily where the owner of said item believes it should go but those times I just remind them they should have put them away to begin with).
  • Leaving shoes, coats, etc. hanging around in the way-- shoes right in front of the door or on the stairs, coats on the couch so people can't walk in without tripping and have nowhere to sit.
  • When I fill the dishwasher and turn around just moments later and someone has put their dirty dishes in the sink instead of just putting them in the dishwasher.

  • Whenever a package of gum or a pen or a marker makes its way through the washer and dryer-- or anything really that can ruin clothes or my machine.  (You would not believe how often this happens!)
  • Having to remind everyone every single night to just do their assigned chores.
  • Large group texts.

  • When people in my family misspell my name (mostly this pertains to my father so that's an ever bigger peeve)-- I know there are a million ways to spell Joanne and I get it when someone who doesn't know me can't spell it right but really if you know me you should remember how to spell it; it's really not that crazy or complicated.
  • We also get Christmas cards/gifts each year with the wrong address-- we've lived here for 20 years; no one should be THAT disorganized.
  • Being on your phone or texting for the majority of the time we're spending together-- especially if we're at a nice meal out somewhere.
  • Unmade beds-- I am the only one in the house that seems to think you should make your bed in the morning (in fact my husband will argue that it's unnecessary since we'll be getting back in it later that day-- um no!... well, yes we will BUT it needs to look neat and clean in the meantime).
In the car:
  • My husband is the only other driver in our house "allowed" to use my car and I completely understand why he moves the seat and mirrors... but he also feels the need to play with other buttons and likes to turn off my interior lights and things like that but never ever sets them back.
  • When other drivers drive with their directional on--- and yet never seem to turn!
  • I really hate when people get into a large parking lot and just drive THROUGH and across all the parking spaces like there aren't aisles for them to drive down.
  • People that don't ever use cruise control on the highway and are driving slow so I move to pass them and then they speed up and I give up and fall into line behind them only to have them slow right down again.  Pick a speed people!

  • When someone honks their horn at me for not turning right on red.
  • Those people that ignore everyone merging on the highway during construction or for a very crowded off ramp and then try to merge in at the very last second.
  • Litterers- we've seen everything from an entire take out bag of trash, a lit cigarette butt, and more come flying out of car windows (or one time at a stop sign in the city a guy actually opened his car door and threw his trash out!).   Just NO!  Wait until you get to your destination and use a garbage can.
  • When I move over to let someone onto the highway and then they either hang around in my blind spot or get right behind me on my tail like I'm holding them up being in the passing lane and they didn't just see me move over for them.
Around town:
  • When people do not pick up after their dogs in public or they bag the poop and then leave it near the parking lot or side of the hiking trail.
  • People that don't leash their dogs, say they are friendly, and then apologize when the dog tries to jump on me or starts barking; I don't care how friendly you think your dog is, if it's not trained to stay at your side quietly then don't unleash it in public.

  • People who eat out and leave a lousy or no tip at all for waitstaff or blame the waitstaff for something that is not their fault or out of their control.
  • Stopping suddenly in the middle of a crowded sidewalk/park/ public area-- or even walking really slowly but taking up the entire path so people behind you can't walk around.  I think we've all done this a time or two but there are some that never even seem to notice, care, or apologize.
  • Smoking/vaping in public or on nature trails/hikes, etc. Some of us have VERY sensitive noses and the smell really ruins the whole experience.
Just in general:
  • Grammar mistakes-- though I get the occasional misspelled one in a blog or Facebook post, the ones that occur on signs and things not only drive me nuts they make me wonder how many people proof-read that before turning it into an actual sign.

  • People that complain about EVERYTHING
  • We constantly get UPS/Amazon packages for a house that is one street over... we have similar addresses so I get it but at the same time they'll leave their packages mixed with ours ALL the time!  However, with GPS technology and stuff I just do not understand how they mix them up so frequently.

I hope you'll join us next month when we share the stories of how we became mothers.

  1. I like your thorough list! And the organization for the categories of PP ;). I agree with you on so many. PP really are part of the human experience. Why can't everyone be like me, lol? Though I don't do many of the "bad character" ones listed (littering, not tipping), I'm sure I've done things that would make other people's lists.

    1. Thank you! I know I do things that drive my family nuts-- like pick up their things and put them away and then forget where I put them.. but it really is just part of life.

  2. This has been such a great topic. And I have to agree with you on all of your pet peeves. The other day an unleashed dog scared the life out of me and I was annoyed at the owner but I didn't say anything. I come home at 4 pm and make my bed every day because I can't stand it. My husband is always asleep when I leave in the morning as he doesn't go to work until the afternoon. He doesn't feel the need to make the bed! I could go on and on. Maybe we need a pet peeves volume III haha!

  3. I realised that I seem to have more pet peeves the older my girls have got. hehehe My girls are terrible for putting empty packets back in the cupboard and not being able to find anything themselves.
I think everything you said, I found myself nodding along.

    1. Yeah, somehow I could forgive them more for their sloppiness when they were little... now I just know it's laziness. One of my boys will leave so many dirty dishes in his room I swear he could fill up 1/2 the dishwasher in one go when we finally gathers them all up.

    1. LOL! It's funny how many pet peeves we all seem to have in common.

  5. Oh my gosh, I am with you on so many of these! Misspelled names are not a favorite- with social media these days, we have no excuse to misspell names anymore. And how hard is it for me to look back at your comment and take note on the spelling of your name? It's not. This was fun to read!

  6. I had to come and compare your list to mine. There are so many that we, and probably many people, have in common. The one about people being on their phones texting someone else when you are right there in front of them is probably my biggest peeve. And how many times do I have to tell someone, nicely, that my name is spelled with a C and not a K! But I am that person who drives around and THROUGH large parking lots like I own the place! It drives my daughter crazy!!

    1. I get that there are so many ways to spell names now and that some people try so hard to give their kids a "different" name by using a more unusual spelling but if you can't remember how to spell my name write it down somewhere that you can look at and remember. LOL.

  7. This was so fun to read- I was chuckling- so many of these things annoy me too- ha!

  8. Let it out!! When dogs run up to me or my kids and the people say "it's okay, he's friendly" I respond with "I don't care if he's friendly or not, we don't like dogs running up to us", they are always so shocked that someone may not like their dog. I could do a whole post on driving!

    1. It did feel pretty cathartic to write them out!! I never really understood road rage when I was first learning to drive but I totally get it now.

  9. I sympathize with a lot of these. And I get the name aggravation. My name gets misspelled a lot. In fact I’ve come to expect and am genuinely surprised when someone gets it right.

    1. Yes! I am shocked if someone guesses how to spell my name and they actually get it right.

    1. I found it pretty interesting that so many of us did.

  12. We had several of the same ones, that's too funny!! It drives me absolutely bonkers when people leave their stuff lying around. Not the kids, since they're so little, but Devin or certain houseguests (my in-laws). Put your stuff away! You're grown adults!!

    1. Yes! I have literally thought those same words... though I guess mine only really look like grown adults.

  14. I had a lot on my list and you thought of even more that should have been! I hate when my kids expect me to know where their things are! And I also hate people who smoke close to me. It happens less now luckily, I remember it being in the malls! And lots of things about driving, for sure. My name gets pronounced wrong a lot and I hate that! Also, our mailman has twice brought a package to the same numbered house on a different street and the poor guy has to bring it over for me!

    1. LOL! I read a few lists and thought "Oooh, that's a good one!" too and wished I had remembered to add it to my list.

  15. So many of these drive me crazy too. I usually don't even say anything anymore because it's simply a waste of time but some days I can't keep quite. Large un-leashed dogs get me into panic mode. I must have had a bad experience in my childhood as I am so afraid of unleashed large dogs (unless I know the dog).

    1. Yeah, I so rarely speak up about them either. I did have a bad experience with dogs in childhood as did my son so we have a genuine fear of most of them.

    1. Right?! I honestly think sometimes my family would not survive without me--- at least they make it seem that way anyway.

  17. Oh yes, a LOT of those drive me crazy as well!! I mentioned some that are very similar, but I did not think of group texts and I HATE those. This was a fun one, and I tried to keep mine from being too much the Grumpy Old Lady. LOL

    1. I didn't want to sound horrible and grumpy either but I think the key is not to actually voice each grievance aloud to perfect strangers each time they occur. LOL

  18. Well now you've got me thinking about mine. I don't think I have many but my hubs might disagree lol. I'm married to a neat-nik so things out of place are never an issue. I am also a believer in making the bed every single day. Most of mine probably relate to driving-people who go slow in the left (PASSING!!) lane and people on their phones to the point they almost forget they're driving are two biggies for me.

    1. I was really surprised my husband refused to comment! LOL. OH yes, people on their cell phones-- sometimes we can tell from 3 car lengths away and it's become a game with me and my boys we'll point and yell "want to bet their on their phone?" We're almost always right too!

  19. Hmmm...it was fun to read these. Mine include women saying, "You can wear that because you're thin". I believe that is PURE hogwash.

  22. Oh, I think you missed this one..."where is the (fill in the blank)?" I go directly to where said person (and we all know who he is) is standing, point to the item, and return to where I was. Or, folding the towels incorrectly, or doing anything incorrectly (read not my way)...my secret theory is they (my kids did this when they were at home) did this because they knew I'd eventually just do it all anyway! I agree with almost all of your pet peeves, Joanne! Great minds and all that, right?

    1. Ha! Yes, they ask me where things are all the time when they are staring right at it! I often think my kids did their chores wrong hoping to get out of them but I always made them redo it themselves the "right" way. I was such a mean mom... but it paid off in the end! LOL
