My favorite Christmas Movies

We always kick off our Christmas season Thanksgiving night after the food is all cleaned up by watching Elf.  Then the day after Thanksgiving we watch Christmas Vacation while decorating our tree and enjoying Thanksgiving leftovers.

I have so many movies that I try to cram in each year and often sneak one movie in each afternoon while blogging or wrapping gifts.  I thought today I'd compile a list of my favorite Christmas movies.

I didn't necessarily write them in a specific order BUT... my top 5 are listed first.  I feel like my holiday is just not complete until I've watched them all at least once!

I'm pretty old school and own the majority of these on DVD (which I watch on my DVD player in my room) but I did try to find where they are streaming online for you and added a link to Amazon in case you want to purchase them for yourself (these are NOT affiliate links just there for your ease).

1. The Holiday--  (streaming on Hulu only if you also have the Live TV option)

2. Love Actually- (according to Google it's only streaming on Peacock)

3. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation - ( HBO Max)

4. ELF ( HBO Max)

5. While You Were Sleeping (Disney+)  (I actually streamed this the day after Thanksgiving as I wrote this post!)

6. Miracle on 34th Street (Disney+) Though I have only ever watched this version.

7. Home Alone (Disney+)-- I really only like the first one

8. The Santa Clause (Disney+)-- Again, I really only like the first one though we are watching the newest miniseries they just came out with where Scott Calvin is ready to retire. It's just alright.

9. Deck the Halls

10. The Family Stone

11. Four Christmases (HBO max)

12. Love Hard ( only on Netflix)

13. 8 Bit Christmas (HBO Max)

14. Christmas with the Kranks  (Free on Amazon Prime but with ads)

15. Last Christmas

What are some of your favorite Christmas/ holiday movies that I should watch?

  1. I love Love Actually, Elf and Home Alone. We've just watched Spirited on Apple TV which was really good and we loved Noelle when we watched it last year.

  2. I have seen most of these but not all of them. I am not a huge holiday movie watcher. I usually only watch one or two a season. But I am curious about a couple of them that I have not seen yet. We watched the new Christmas Story movie. It was pretty good!

    1. I've been debating about checking that one out; I'm not a HUGE fan of the original Christmas Story but have watched it a few times.

  3. Christmas with the Kranks, The Family Stone, The Holiday and While You Were Sleeping are some of my favorites too! I also love White Christmas and New Years Eve and watch them every year. I've not heard of some of these....thanks for sharing about them. I will be watching those soon! I'm going to make a note on my phone. Have you seen the new Netflix one with Justin Hartley? Someone told me they loved it...Noel something or other. Have a great day!

    1. I don't think I've heard of New Years Eve and I just looked up that Justin Hartley one to add to my list... it's called The Noel Diary.

  5. Elf and Christmas Vacation are two of our favorites but we also like Daddy's Home 2. It's really good, super funny and one of our new faves. The original Miracle on 34th Street is really good and I have to mention it's a Wonderful Life. I'm from Seneca Falls NY and it's said that our small town was the inspiration for the movie. People come from all over the world to run in the It's a Wonderful 5K Run every December. Happy Holiday's

  9. so many good Christmas movies. I agree I really only like the first Home Alone and Santa Claus. My favorite to watch with the kids is the Polar Express and The Grinch with Jim Carrey

    1. I prefer the newest animated Grinch that they came out with in 2018 but as much as we always read the story each Christmas I'm not really a huge grinch fan. My boys LOVED the Polar Express though and we even went on a few Polar Express rides at nearby museums and train stations and read the book a lot. Such fun memories!

  13. Great list. There are a few that I haven't watched so I will have to get onto those. My all time favourite movie is Elf! I always LOL every single time. My family aren't so keen on it anymore, my son says that it's because they always had to watch it multiple times in primary school during the last few weeks of school when all the schoolwork was done for the year. I could never get sick of it!

  15. Can you believe I haven't seen these movies? I'm not a Christmas movie person. Might have to give it a chance.

    1. None of them?! Wow! I do find that so hard to believe. It seems like that's all that was ever played on TV here in the States as soon as Thanksgiving ended here all the stations turned to holiday movies and shows so I grew up with many of these being part of our tradition... it's a bit harder to find them streaming though.
