10 on the 10th.. on the 12th! Birthday Edition

While I had my blog post all written up for the 10th (the 2nd Monday of the month is always reserved for our Not Just a Mom link up!) I knew I didn't want to let this month's 10 on the 10th pass me by.  Marsha (and Leslie!) often come up with such fun questions to ponder.  This month is themed all around birthdays and I can't wait to read everyone's answers.

I admit that I struggled with so many of these!  I have an awful memory I guess.

1. Oh boy, my earliest birthday memory would probably be... enjoying a roller skating party at Skate Inn in Norwich with a bunch of my girlfriends.

2. My favorite birthday tradition is a new one that my husband and I just started  few years ago; we now take little day or weekend trips to celebrate our birthdays.  It has been so fun exploring new little towns and areas! So far we visited:

  •  Charleston (for a joint celebration the year we both turned 40)
  • York, Maine
  • Cape Cod/ Nantucket
  • Lincoln, New Hampshire ( a few times; staying at different resorts)
  • Edgecomb, Maine
  • Scarborough, Maine
York, Maine

Hyannis, Cape Cod

3. We typically celebrate birthdays with just our immediate family.  We invite the grandparents over for a meal and cake and the boys get a few gifts.  When they were younger we threw bigger parties with friends and I really enjoyed theming them all out.  We've had a shark party, a Skylander themed party, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle party, and many, many more.

We made ninja turtle masks for each of the kids

4. The best birthday gift I ever received was probably the new car we bought this year; after buying it my husband asked if he needed to get me a birthday gift and I said no but if it was my gift then it was MY car!  I do let him drive it though. 😉

5. The best birthday gift I ever gave was... I really don't know! I think I'm a pretty good gift giver. I like to give meaningful gifts or handmade gifts.  Things like personalized shirts and mugs, scrapbooks, etc.

6. If money were no object I'd want to celebrate my birthday with a big trip to some place like Hawaii, Bora Bora, or Paris!

7. My favorite birthday treat varies from year to year but usually it's some sort of cheesecake and something with chocolate/berries like these triple chocolate cheesecake cups Alec made me in 2020.

8. Typically my birthday celebrations last a couple of days; I go shopping with my mom one day near my birthday.  We have small dinner/cake with the boys and then often my husband and I take a weekend trip.

9. The best thing about my birthday is that it's in the summer-- I hated that I had a summer birthday as a kid since all my friends were always gone on summer vacation but I love it now.  I almost always have nice warm, sunny weather to enjoy and it falls right at a time when all summer clothes are on sale so I often got more gifts since everything I wanted was on sale.

10. I am a Cancer and I used to follow and read about my horoscope sign a lot when I was in high school.

  1. Going on a trip each year with your husband is such a neat idea. You guys have all those memories and take advantage of living close to stunningly beautiful natural areas. Love the cupcakes and themed birthday parties/ decor.

    1. It has been such a fun way to make memories together and on each trip we plan a bit more about our retirement and other trips we want to take as well.

    1. Yes! It's wonderful and we love to plan weekend trips that are close enough that we can just get there and enjoy it without having to spend full days driving first.

  3. Joanne,
Great post!! Thanks so much for stopping by!!
i do not like to make a big deal out of my birthday and i often had to work on the actual day so never got to celebrate it on that day....A quiet pizza party with my kids on just one day and that is more than enough for me!!
    Stay safe, healthy and happy!!
    Hugs,
    Deb

    1. That's wonderful! I thought it was so cute that at my husband's current job each employee get their birthday (or another day of their choice within their birthday month) as a paid "holiday" off.

  4. I love the idea of going on a trip to celebrate birthday! Maybe then for a "big" birthday you could plan for Paris or something like that.

    1. Yes, for milestone birthdays we tend to choose something bigger! (But my husband is firmly a travel within the US kind of person).

  7. I love your birthday tradition! We often get away for my birthday because it is in April...and when the spring weather starts, we are ready to go somewhere! My husband's December birthday is more of a challenge - lol! Fun post and link-up!

    1. OH yes, winter birthdays would be a bit trickier. My birthday is right at the start of summer and my husband's is at the start of fall so it works out perfectly.

  8. All the images are adorable! I like how you spend your celebrations. We do not planned these days, we keep them simple, but with... champagne! If we synchronize with a holiday, we like to be at the seaside!
Thank you for the visit! Have a fine week!

  11. I loved reading all about your birthday celebrations, and how nice that you go on trips to celebrate. Mine is Christmas Eve so it's always a cold one! I've started celebrating a day or so before so that my birthday doesn't blend in to Christmas and I actually get a chance to celebrate it. x

    1. Thank you! We have a cousin who was born on Christmas eve and her family always celebrated her 1/2 birthday in June just so it didn't get blended into Christmas.

  12. Oh, I knew you would have really good answers, Joanne! I love the tradition of a little trip. We have actually gone on a couple around my birthday but not specifically for my birthday. Nigel's is in February so the weather is iffy. I don't think we've ever traveled at that time of year! Thanks for linking up!

  14. I miss birthday parties and fun I used to make happen for our kids, and then their kids. Now it's just we two, and we are away from our family, we do little. However my 70th was special because everyone came. I think you have a great set of birthday memories and traditions. Thank you for sharing your post in the Wednesday’s Words and Pics link up for this week and being part of the #WWandPics Community.

Hope to see you next week too.

    Denyse.
