Ponchos, Wraps, and Capes with Ageless Style

This month's theme ponchos, wraps, and capes was picked by me!  I just love all three of those-- ponchos, capes, and wraps are all fully stocked in my closet.  I wear them all fall and most of the winter too.   I had commented on one of Jodi's posts that it can be so hard to wear them in the winter as here in New England you really need another outer layer to go outside and coats do not fit well over any of them.  When I mentioned I had a thick coat poncho that I often wore over my outfit poncho she hinted it would make a great look for this very challenge.

I knew she was right!  We had a milder winter day where fresh snow had fallen overnight and I convinced Evan to help me out with some photography.

My poncho coat is made of a thick black fleece and has faux fur trim around the bottom and the neck.  It's so nice and cozy.

As you can see the poncho isn't always longer than the layer underneath though and you can see a bit of my sweater poncho peeking out the back.

I paired my outfit with some flare jeans I got through stitch fix and some new waterproof, fleece lined shoes I picked up from LL Bean (their website says they are slippers but I wear them everywhere!).  They look like regular snow boots from the outside and they are so incredibly comfortable and warm and really do keep my feet drier than any other shoe I own.

Removing the outer layer reveals my new poncho from Talbots after Christmas sale.  I don't need anymore sweaters or ponchos but just could not resist this one!

I love the color pattern and the material is nice and soft.  With the cowl neck I don't have to wear a turtleneck under it either (though I certainly could!).  I paired my sweater with a plain black fitted shirt and some of my favorite black jewelry

  1. Like you , I too am a life long fan of ponchos! My very first poncho was knitted by my mother-in-law for me when I was pregnant with my son. And I have been loving and wearing them since❣️

    1. What a wonderful memory! I had a poncho for my first communion that I think a grandmother or elderly aunt made for me. I have a few in my closet that my mother and sister have made for me as well.

  2. I love ponchos! And both of yours are so great, Joanne. I have a similar black fleece one with faux fur trim. I haven't worn it in years though. I should restyle it soon! Your Talbots sweater poncho really is gorgeous. I can understand why you found it irresistible!

    1. Thanks! It has gotten so much use in the few years I've owned it.

  4. I have never owned a poncho, but I've always loved them... they are just so elegant! Every time I see someone in a poncho I'm always reminded of that scene in Beauty and the Beast where Belle is wearing that cape/poncho with a hood. I always wanted something just like that when I was little because I thought she looked so beautiful in it!

    1. I do think they feel rather elegant too. I have one that is a teal green and covered in sequins that's a lot of fun to style but it's thinner and more of a spring material. I always wanted a little red riding hood style coat but am not sure I'd get enough use out of it.

  5. I am loving that first poncho: I thrifted a similar one in grey but ended donating it back since I didn't wear it. I do have 3 though that I wear in rotation. Perfect layer of coziness and warmth!

    1. I honestly don't know how many ponchos, wraps, and capes I have... a lot though. I do try to wear them fairly frequently.

  6. I have one poncho and would have the same problem with putting a coat on over it!

    1. It's tough; so I try to wear them when I know we'll only be outside for a limited amount of time (I can freeze a bit just walking from car to house if we're heading for a party or something).

  7. I love ponchos so much... but I have to be careful what I buy because sometimes I look like a round ball in them. They cant be too thick.

  9. Nice ponchos! The black fleece looks like it's really warm. But my favorite is the cowl-neck sweater poncho. Both ponchos look great on you.

  10. I don't think I've ever owned or even tried on a poncho. But love how this one looks on you, both the sweater and outer layer, but the sweater is my favorite. And the shoes do look like some great slip ons for winter when waterproof- ness is a must!

  12. LOVE it. Why not layer 2 together like this? I call it brilliant. We do double denim, so why not double ponchos. Heck, tomorrow I'm showing double dresses too. The list can go on and on.

  14. I am in the same boat as you, I definitely have to wear an outer layer on top of my wrap or poncho. It's bulky and annoying so I usually just put it on when I finally get to work during winter and then use it in the spring/ fall as an extra layer on warm-ish days. I love your poncho coat, so cute!

    1. Yeah, either I wait to put it on when I get there or else I just make sure to park real close to the building and freeze for the few minutes I'm outside. Though I do prefer to wear them in spring and summer when I don't have to worry about a coat at all.

  15. I can see why you could not resist that Talbot's poncho - it's so pretty and the colors are great! Living in a cold climate like you do, you need lots of fun and interesting layers. Great idea for your link up - I bet everyone has at least one of these!

  16. You look so pretty in black!! That first poncho is so pretty. Looks great with your jeans but would be terrific dressed up, too. I really, really like it. And it is such a versatile option to a coat. Of course, I love, love, love your snow, too!! And that darling Talbots poncho. You look like a snow bunny in it. Even your nails are perfection for this challenge. Great prompt!

  17. I really want to try a poncho. I had one years ago but never wore it. I have gotten into wearing sweaters more this year and after seeing and reading your post I hope to keep my eye out and get a poncho soon! They are so cute and I love how they dressed up your jeans :)
