8th Grade Mid- Year Check In

The 1/2 way point in our schoolyear passed us by nearly a full month ago and I never even gave it a thought.  Typically I like to check in mid way through our year and make sure we are staying on track. All in all we're not doing too bad but I definitely see a few areas where we need to buckle down.



We had planned on:

Math-- Pre- Algebra using Kumon along with Mastering Essential Math Skills and 8th Grade Math Minutes.  We scrapped Kumon pre-algebra altogether and jumped right into using No-Nonsense Algebra.  We're focusing more on his other two books and only working on Algebra a few times a week since we'll carry that over into high school but math is going well; as usual. 





Language arts:  

Spelling-- We're hoping to finish up the entire Apples & Pears series. We are nearly done book C and starting on book D. 



Writing/ Vocab: Writeshop 1 & Vocabulary workbook for 8th grade We just finished up lesson 6 in Writeshop and since we plan on using this book for Freshman English I'm happy with that.  We only have a handful of lessons left in his Vocbab. book. 




Grammar-- Grammar workbook While we are not 1/2 way through this grammar book, I know we'll start working more in here once we finish up his Vocab book so I'm not too worried.  



History/ Geography-- US History: People & Events 1865- Present and Understanding the U. S. Constitution  I have forgotten about these two books entirely!  We have been working a lot with geography though so I think as long as we start sprinkling in a few history lessons we'll be just fine. 




Science- EZ Psychology  We are more than 1/2 way through this book and we've been supplementing with fun shows like Brain Games, How the Brain Works, and the Truman Show. 


We may add in Foreign Language; he's been talking about using French and I already have this French Grammar book I had gotten for Alec to use (before he decided to head to our local high school). We'd also add in Duolingo for 15 minutes a day.  We decided to hold off on all foreign language skills for next year.

      He does too; I'm actually not a huge fan of workbooks and used a lot more hands on stuff with my older two but Evan truly prefers a workbook.

    Sounds like a fun year so far! Never heard of No-Nosense Workbooks, it sounds like a real winner definitely considering adding it to my kiddo's math next year :)

      We like it. I've used it with my older two boys as well and it is very straight forward.

    This school year is flying over. It sounds like things are going great. Good on you with the maths, especially the algebra, it's something I have never got the hang of. x

      Oh I always loved Algebra... geometry on the other hand I could have done without anything beyond the basics of finding area and perimeter.

    Gosh I bet you learn as much as the boys do this way. I wouldnt enjoy the history that much but I'd love the psychology!

      I really do! I am loving how much I have learned through this long homeschooling journey. I'm going to miss it when they are all finished with it.

    Thanks for sharing your curriculum, Joanne. Are there novels you are currently reading as part of Language Arts? I'm sure my students really disliked it, I loved teaching diagramming sentences! I thought it was a very useful way to pick up on grammar.

      My boys have always been requited to read every day but they can pick whatever they want to read. Right now Evan is reading through the Lord of the Rings/ Hobbit series.

    I love all of these choices. The mastering math essentials was a favorite for my freshman daughter. I have never used write shop, but it looks interesting!

Do you remember the TGIF lineups on Friday nights? Things That Make Me Laugh

I loved the challenge of this week's list for our 26 lists link up.  I don't know about you but I really need to laugh more lately.  It's such a great stress reliever. 1.  Books-- I love a good funny book that makes me laugh out loud.  I haven't read one in a while but if you have any recommendations I'm all ears.  The last book I can remember making me laugh was the Un-Honeymooners. 2  The boys being silly. 3.  Watching shows like America's Funniest Videos or Family Feud. 4. My husband.  Most people don't realize it but he's actually pretty funny and often makes me laugh. 5.  Whenever my sisters/ family get together and we get to reminiscing (particularly if my Aunt Elaine is around) we end up laughing so hard at all the old family stories that we are all in tears by the end of the night.  It's fabulous. 6. Making Gift Card and Money Holders Using Scrapbooking and Cardmaking Supples

I don't tend to keep a lot of crafting supplies on hand so when I saw this month's de-stash challenge I wasn't sure what I was going to make.  I finally realized that with so many of my Christmas gifts being cash and gift cards this year that I needed to make up some fun paper crafting/ creative ways to gift them.   I still want my nieces and nephews to have something to open so I pulled out my papers and stamps and made up some cute little money/gift card holders. They were much easier to make than I thought.  The first one I worked on was to hold some oversized Nintendo gift cards.  I made a standard sized card and folded down one corner of the card front.  Then I ran my double sided tape along the bottom an 1/2 way up the side creating a cute little pocket.  Finally I added some cute embellishments and ribbons.   Voila! Making a Sugar Cookie "Gingerbread" House

 Alec really wanted to try making his own gingerbread house this year without using a premade kit.  We talked about how we never really eat the house since they don't taste very good.  Years ago we gave up on the frosting that comes in the kit and began making our own so we thought perhaps we should try making our our house too. Only problem is that no one in the house likes gingerbread.  We talked about trying to make the house using a sugar cookie recipe.  Alec was so excited at that idea since he just LOVES sugar cookies.   He found a recipe online for a simple sugar cookie recipe and mixed up the dough.  He rolled it out an cut it to the size of our cookie sheets-- we had read that it's easiest to cut the house pieces out after the dough has been baked and is still warm and soft because then you don't have to worry about any of the pieces losing their shape while baking. Dollar Store Candy Cane Wreath
