Making a Keychain for Mom Using the Cricut



The focus for this month's Pinterest Challenge was all about Mother's Day and while I had a few gifts already purchased I really liked the idea of creating something cute and simple for my mom this year.



The purpose of the Pinterest Challenge is to motivate all the participants (and you too) to not just pin, but to make it happen!

I found a pin for making faux leather keychains on Pinterest but decided to also look around on the Cricut site and see what I could find.  

I found a free SVG file for making a MOM keychain that I decided to use.  I ordered some key rings, faux leather sheets on Amazon and as soon as they arrived I was ready to set to work.



I swapped out my cutting blade with the rotary cutter and cut out the MOM sign.  Using Tacky Glue I glued the two words together with the right sides of the fabric facing out.

I went digging through my jewelry making bin to find a pretty bead and I threaded that on before adding the keyring.  I think it's cute and I will definitely be making a few more keychains using the fabric and rings I have left over.  



My oldest is supposed to be getting his driver's license this year and I'm thinking of making him one with his name or perhaps a pick up truck on it.

    That looks great! I think your son will love that- a personalized keychain made by mom. The bead was a great idea.

    I love the way this came out, also it's cool to see the process, when I first saw it I wasn't sure how the back looked. Do you know if this would work with the Cricut Air or only with the maker?

      I would think that as long as the Cricut Air can cut fabrics it would work just fine.

    I love this idea for a Mother's Day gift. I think your son would love a personalize key chain when he gets his license too. My son was supposed to get his license this month, but the DMV is closed :-(

      Yeah, my son was supposed to be getting his learner's permit this week and then we have to wait 6 months for him to take his test but not it's all on hold.

      It's a lot of fun and so versatile. I'm just starting to really use it more and branch out on the projects I'm putting together.

    Great minds think alike - I made this exact key chain and was going to use it for my post this month. Only problem was that I couldn't find a key chain ring to put on it!

    I like this idea. You can even make custom names and other sayings with the faux leather.

Things That Make Me Laugh

I loved the challenge of this week's list for our 26 lists link up.  I don't know about you but I really need to laugh more lately.  It's such a great stress reliever. 1.  Books-- I love a good funny book that makes me laugh out loud.  I haven't read one in a while but if you have any recommendations I'm all ears.  The last book I can remember making me laugh was the Un-Honeymooners. 2  The boys being silly. 3.  Watching shows like America's Funniest Videos or Family Feud. 4. My husband.  Most people don't realize it but he's actually pretty funny and often makes me laugh. 5.  Whenever my sisters/ family get together and we get to reminiscing (particularly if my Aunt Elaine is around) we end up laughing so hard at all the old family stories that we are all in tears by the end of the night.  It's fabulous. 6. Making Gift Card and Money Holders Using Scrapbooking and Cardmaking Supples

I don't tend to keep a lot of crafting supplies on hand so when I saw this month's de-stash challenge I wasn't sure what I was going to make.  I finally realized that with so many of my Christmas gifts being cash and gift cards this year that I needed to make up some fun paper crafting/ creative ways to gift them.   I still want my nieces and nephews to have something to open so I pulled out my papers and stamps and made up some cute little money/gift card holders. They were much easier to make than I thought.  The first one I worked on was to hold some oversized Nintendo gift cards.  I made a standard sized card and folded down one corner of the card front.  Then I ran my double sided tape along the bottom an 1/2 way up the side creating a cute little pocket.  Finally I added some cute embellishments and ribbons.   Voila! Making a Sugar Cookie "Gingerbread" House

 Alec really wanted to try making his own gingerbread house this year without using a premade kit.  We talked about how we never really eat the house since they don't taste very good.  Years ago we gave up on the frosting that comes in the kit and began making our own so we thought perhaps we should try making our our house too. Only problem is that no one in the house likes gingerbread.  We talked about trying to make the house using a sugar cookie recipe.  Alec was so excited at that idea since he just LOVES sugar cookies.   He found a recipe online for a simple sugar cookie recipe and mixed up the dough.  He rolled it out an cut it to the size of our cookie sheets-- we had read that it's easiest to cut the house pieces out after the dough has been baked and is still warm and soft because then you don't have to worry about any of the pieces losing their shape while baking.
