Wellness Weekend: Hiking, The Flu, & A Weigh-in Update

I moved my Weigh-in Wednesdays posts to the weekend so I could link up with some fellow bloggers for their Wellness Weekends.  I'm not weighing in nearly as much as I should be and I am beginning to shift my focus more to my overall health and wellness so it made sense to me.

My family and I had spent the last few week of January doing lots and lots of hiking.  My boys and I try to get out at least once a week (sometimes two or three times even!) if the weather allows and we always aim to hike for at least an hour.

My husband joined us one weekend and we hiked for 5 miles!!  It took us a couple hours but it is such a rare treat to get out hiking in January and not have to worry overly much about ice and snow.

Then February hit and the flu came to our house.  We focused on keeping those that hadn't come down with the flu as healthy as possible while allowing those that were sick to rest, mend, and recover.

My younger sons and I tried to go for short hikes and walks each day to get in fresh air and exercise as well as taking elderberry supplements, washing our hands like crazy, and getting plenty of rest.

Somehow through all this I managed to drop a few pounds and am just 4.8 lbs from my goal weight!

I have been awful about tracking what I'm eating and I got off track with my daily yoga/ Pilates exercises.  So my focus for the next month is to start tracking everything again and try to get up early enough to exercise at least 3 times a week.

I'm also not doing great getting in all my water each day and am trying to make sure to finish at least one 30 ounce yeti full by lunch.

  1. Good for you keeping your weight goals while the flu was looming in your home! I think getting out of the house and exercising helped with that. :)

    1. I think that fresh air and exercise helped too; I also think it helped the three of us stay healthy.

  2. Thank you, Joanne, for linking up with me on Wellness Weekend 2020. Your hikes look great with the forest, lakes and waterfalls. Congrats on getting closer to your goal weight! You're setting a good fitness example for your family, too. Hope everyone is well again after the flu. The next link up is on March 15. Optional prompt is Spring forward. I hope to see you there. #WW2020

  3. Oh, you're so lucky you can hike right now. We are still buried in ice and snow here. Congrats on your weight loss!

    1. We, oddly enough, have not had any real snow or ice to speak of here. If we had we'd still have been hiking but we would have been using our new snowshoes (we still haven't had a chance to break in yet).

  4. So proud of you!! That goal weight is well within reach and you look smashing!! I am tracking again just because it is easy to eat things without realizing what I am doing if I don't track. Does that make sense?
We have discovered pickle ball and love it. Have you played? So. Fun. And we are pretty enthusiastic hikers, too. Glad you have had a mild enough weather to allow you to be outdoors and go hiking. I am hoping we can work our way back to hiking the toughest peak in our area by spring.
So glad you are linking up with us and shifting your focus from weight loss to all over improved health. #ww2020

    1. Thank you! I have started tracking food again as of today for that same reason. I have not heard of pickle ball; I'll have to look that up.

  5. Good for you for getting out to hike. You look great! Oh, that flu! I think it is terrible this year. So many of my friends have gotten it. When I was a teacher, I got the flu almost every year, whether I got the shot or not. Since I retired, I have been spared (knock on wood!)

    1. Thank you! It is a really terrible year for the flu. We've only had it go through our house twice (and both time I was spared; thankfully!)... both time were years that we were told the shot would not have helped us since EVERYONE was coming down with it regardless.

  6. Great job on your weight goal! My kids were all sick but I'm not sure we had the flu. Probably not, but who knows.

    1. Thanks! I often have to push myself to get out the door; especially in winter since I don't like the cold weather but I always feel so good once we do!
