Rae Dunn Inspired Buffalo Check Ornaments
Every year for the past few years I have taken place in an ornament crafting exchange and it's one of my favorite craft projects of the year! This year I was paired up with Jenny from Cookies, Coffee, and Crafts. We exchanged a few e-mails and when she told me "I love buffalo check, Rae Dunn inspired, Farmhouse style" I knew just the thing to make!
I purchased a set of 4" embroidery hoops, some pre-cut 5" buffalo check fabric, and set to work using my Cricut for some Rae Dunn inspired words.
The hardest part for me was to pick the actual pattern of the fabric to use-- sure the larger checks are the true buffalo print but I felt some of the smaller prints looked better on the ornament. I ultimately decided to make her a set of 4 ornaments in a variety of patterns.
I used my Cricut to draw out the words and played around with some fonts before deciding to use Candara Light. I did have to unlock the feature that keeps the fonts from going out of shape since I wanted to stretch the letters nice and tall in a more Rae Dunn kind of way.
When I was happy with what I had I printed one word out on paper and made sure it fit into the ornament area before cutting all 4 out of iron-on vinyl. I weeded out the excess vinyl.
I then ironed on the saying to each fabric square and put the ornaments together. They looked so cute and I set to work finishing them off.
So many of the hoop ornaments just glue the fabric to the back and leave it messy like that but I just didn't like that look; plus when I held the hoops up to the light I could see that mess through to the front. I found some scrap felt I had on hand and cut out some circles to cover it. Now it looked finished from both sides.
I went digging through my ribbon bins and found some pretty coordinating ribbon that I used to make the hangings. I just love how they turned out and hope that Jenny does too!
