Vacation Day 1-- Denver to Cheyenne

We took a family trip- flying into Denver Colorado, driving up through Wyoming, staying in Rapid City South Dakota for a few days and then driving through South  Dakota and Nebraska into Iowa.

Today I'll just share a bit about our first day of vacation where we landed in Denver, picked up our rental car, and drove through to Cheyenne, Wyoming for the night.

While we never got all that close to the Rocky Mountains we could certainly see them the moment we entered the airspace over Denver.  We enjoyed looking at them and even zoomed in with the camera to determine if the white was rocks or snow...

Sure looks like snow to me!  I could not believe they still had snow in Sept!

The great plains are HUGE! You can see for miles and miles.

We stopped along the way to eat at Freddy's and enjoyed delicious steakburgers and fries.

We arrived in Cheyenne, found our hotel and checked in.  We stayed at the Historic Plains hotel; a hotel that has been around 1911.  Our rooms were quite spacious and the hotel had lots of neat little touches that reminded you of the local history of the area.

After settling in a bit we decided to head out and walk around the city.  Cheyenne is the capital of Wyoming but for us, it seemed like a pretty small capital city!  It had so many cute country touches and I just loved the old architecture we found.

My husband and son stopped for some freshly made ice cream sandwich cookies at Mary's Mountain Cookies; they smelled so good and had an amazing assortment of freshly baked cookies to choose from but I was just stuffed still from dinner.

It was probably around 6 on Saturday night and with the time zone changes was already 8 for us; not super late but late enough when your day started at 4:30.  We walked back to the hotel eating snacks and decided to walk around the park across the street to check out a few of the "Big Boots".  There are 18 of these 8 foot boots decorated to showcase Cheyenne's history.  We had a lot of fun checking out the details on the few boots we found.

Evan joked he only wanted to see a prairie dog on the trip and now he was all set

    1. Aren't they so cute?! I loved those; but boy was I wiped out by this time. My smile (and clothes) were quite travel weary by then.

  2. Love the big boots! When we were there, they had big buffaloes everywhere instead. I always like when cities do that with different painted objects!

    1. Yeah it is a fun draw and we were able to look up each individual boot and see why they were themed the way they were.

  5. That big boot is great. It looks to have a very different vibe than here in the North East. Glad you had such a nice trip.

    1. Definitely a different vibe; we could not believe that almost everything we came across was closed-- at 6pm on a Saturday night!
