Hiking the Strattobowl Rim Trail-- Twice!

While in South Dakota we had pretty warm weather most days and hiking was difficult.  One night after dinner my husband suggested we go check out a short trail nearby.  The boys didn't want to join us so just myself, my husband, and my mother- in- law went to check it out.

It was cloudy and threatening rain but we thought we had time to hike to the summit and back.... we were wrong!  We no sooner made it nearly to the top than we could see rain coming in the distance.  By the time we made it to the car we were SOAKED to the skin!  Thunder and lightening were all around us. It was quite the adventure.

We talked the boys into going back the next afternoon.  After our hike around Sylvan lake at Custer State Park and a nice lunch in Keystone we convinced the boys to take one more short hike with us.  We wanted to try hiking to the summit of Strattobowl Rim again and promised them that it wasn't very long or difficult at all.

They reluctantly agreed.  In no time we made it to the summit and we learned why it was called was the Strattobowl-- it housed a stratospheric balloon launch back in the 1930's.  The views were even more stunning with the blue skis and sunshine.
