Sloppy Joes Recipe

We started making Sloppy Joes about a year or so ago when my husband suggested we try them.  I honestly don't remember eating them as a kid (I didn't like ground beef when I was younger; it's a texture thing).

I did remember the cafeteria serving them often at school and that it was always a hit, especially with all the boys so I figured why not give it a try!  It soon became Evan's favorite meal and we've played around with a few recipes.

We finally stumbled upon a favorite and I thought I'd share it with all of you.  Have you ever tried a Sloppy Joe?  They're fairly messy sandwiches; hence the name!  But with the right combination of flavors they can be quite tasty!

Ingredients:
1 lb ground beef (I like 93% lean but any kind will do)
1 Tablespoon dried minced onion
1 tsp mined garlic
1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 cup BBQ sauce
1-2 Tablespoon brown sugar (amount varies depending on the  sweetness of the BBQ sauce)
1 Tablespoon yellow mustard
1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 cups Shredded cheddar cheese
6 hamburger buns

In a small saucepan I brown up the burger and dried onion; adding in the garlic just as it's all a nice even brown color.

I drain the burger of any fat and then combine it with the ketchup, BBQ, brown sugar, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce.

We add a bit of the meat to one side of each hamburger bun and top it with some shredded cheddar cheese.

Some of us prefer to melt the cheese in the microwave keeping the bun nice and soft while others prefer their sandwiches to be heated in the oven to melt the cheese and crisp up the bun slightly.  It's all a matter of taste.

There you have it! The perfect Sloppy Joe recipe.

I like to serve them with a hearty helping of salad to round out the meal.

  1. These look delicious! Unfortunately, one of my kids still doesn't like the texture of gr. beef so this would probably be a no go at our house! But it sure looks good to me!

    1. I never did either! I would not eat ground beef as a kid because of the texture too.

  4. Hi this is Kristina visiting from Full Plate Thursday. This actually brings back memories of when I was a kid and my mom would make these. At the time I didn't appreciate them but looking back they were sooo good! I don't remember her ever adding cheese but the way it melts into the meat looks delicious.

    1. Thanks! I had never had them before and just added cheese because cheese makes just about everything a little better (in my opinion!).
