100 Days of Science #54-- Fluoride and Calcium Experiment
We have soaked an egg in vinegar before to make a "bouncing" egg like many Pinterest photos show but I was intrigued with the idea of taking the experiment one step further.
We read that if you coat one egg in a fluoride toothpaste first that the fluoride will protect the shell for the acidic vinegar and keep it from breaking down as fast.
We thought it sounded like the perfect experiment to try!. We got out two eggs, two small mason jars (with lids) and a tube of toothpaste.
First we smeared toothpaste all over one egg and then set it aside to dry on the counter for 24 hours.
Then we set them on the counter and observed them for the next two days.
We didn't see much difference in our observations at all.
After two days we unscrewed the lids and dumped out the vinegar.
With just a bit of gentle rinsing our non- toothpaste egg looked like this!
At first the boys thought the difference was rather remarkable but I reminded them that we had rinsed off the non- toothpaste egg and to keep our experiment true we had to rinse the toothpaste egg too.
It looked like this when we were done... and honestly if we had kept rinsing we could have washed all the white off I'm sure. However, it was a bit thicker and seemed to be a bit more resistant to the vinegar.
I thought the results were going to be a bit more dazzling and I began to wonder if we should have used a thicker coat of toothpaste or not washed it off as thoroughly as we did.

Thank you for all of these ideas. Keeping science interesting in homeschool has been a challenge. :)
ReplyDeleteOh you are welcome!
DeleteThis is so cool and such a fun experiment.
ReplyDeleteIt really was neat! I was skeptical that we were going to see any sort of difference but we did.
DeleteInteresting result! Thanks so much for linking up with me at my #UnlimitedMonthlyLinkParty 8, this party will be open until January 26. I pinned your post! My themed party 9 for All Things Crochet is open until January 25 if you have any appropriate posts.
