How to Decorate an Ornament Using the Cricut

I signed up for a crafting ornament exchange a few months ago and was paired up with Shirley from Intelligent Domestications.  I was thrilled since I read Shirley's blog pretty regularly and felt like I had some idea of what she'd like.

She has lots and lots of blog posts all about Christmas and even a spectacular look at her Christmas tree and some of the treasured ornaments she has.

I had a few ornament ideas rolling around in my head and with a $15 budget knew I had to narrow it down a bit.  I gathered my supplies and set to work.

Ultimately I settled on using my Cricut, some adhesive backed vinyl, plaid ribbon, and some plastic ornaments (I felt I could really press the vinyl down on those better than the glass ones).

I picked a few holiday themed shapes fro my Circut library and added some words; learning how to curve them to match the shapes.  Once I had them sized and liked how they look I began cutting them out one at a time using a different color/sheet of vinyl for each image.

After I weeded my images from the rest of the vinyl, I used transfer tape to move the whole image in one piece onto the ornament making sure to center the image.

Working slowly from the center out I pressed down the vinyl making sure there were no bubbles or wrinkles.  I made sure to press down firmly and then topped each ornament with a little ribbon bow.

I had so much fun making all of these ornaments! I always try to exchange a set of ornaments.

Once finished, I packed them back up in their original case and mailed them off to Shirley.  Hopefully they put a nice big smile on her face.

    1. I'm just starting to use it; I got it last Christmas and have been so intimidated to try "new" projects. They usually end up being a bit more frustrating than I've planned. But I'm getting there!

  13. Those are so pretty! I'm wondering, is it hard to get the designs to attach flat on the round ornaments? :) Lisa

    1. I really didn't have a hard time getting them to lay flat since my ornaments did have somewhat flat sides and I made sure to size my images a bit small.

    1. That is the hardest part of working with vinyl isn't it? I'm not sure if it was because these were smaller images than I am used to or because I was working with plastic but I found it much easier to get the vinyl lying flat.

  18. I love them so much and have already hung them on our tree! Love that you took the time to add words and the graphic on each one. They are really pretty. Like you, I have been somewhat intimidated by my Cricut and not created much with it. After I received this beautiful set of ornaments from you, I was inspired and created an ornament using my Cricut! Thank you.
