100 Days of Science # 31 -- Roger William's Zoo Trip
My younger boys really enjoy visiting the zoo and seeing all the animals. While we often visit the same few zoos over and over again we do feel that each trip is unique. This time we decided to head to Roger Williams Zoo.
The zoo often has new encounters, exhibits, and even animals to see. Some animals are more active on some trips than others and we try to make sure we visit at different times of the year and different times of day too.
We got to feed the giraffes! This is something I have been wanting to do for a few years now and it seems like it never worked out at any other zoos or Busch Gardens but it finally all fell into place.
Alec told me the tongue swiped his hand it felt a bit like a cat's tongue; scratchy and like sand paper.
We sat and watched the harbor seals for a bit. They were swimming around and then began chasing each other trying to bite one another's tails.
We read all about snakes in New England and the United States |
Alec's favorite is the red panda
The zoo had a new gibbon; they used to have two but one died and now the remaining gibbon has a new friend. As you can see they get along great! A docent told us that they had to have a video loop of the old gibbon playing for the lonely gibbon until they were able to find her a new friend. She was that lonely!
The tree kangaroo was a sleep again.
All the otters were curled up together in the shade.
We finally saw the Barbirusa up close and examined his horns.
The king vulture has one of the most powerful jaws of all vultures |
The moon bears were sleepy too |
I don't think I'd want to run into them in "real" life but they do have cute faces (but man, look at those claws!) |
We sat to watch the red panda for a bit again too.
We took the long walk around the pond seeing a heron and some small turtles and birds.
The boys got an ice cream and we slowly walked back towards the entrance/exit and headed home for the day.
It's always so much fun to visit the zoo and we learn so much by observing the animals, reading the signs, and talking to the workers. A great hands- on way to learn more about science.

ReplyDeleteIt really is a great zoo; we visit at least once a year. As of this trip they were under construction for a whole new Amazon/ Rainforest exhibit so we may have to go back again in the fall.
DeleteThe red panda is so cute #thinkingoutloudthursday@_karendennis
ReplyDeleteThey really are adorable animals.
DeleteWhen my sons were children, this was exactly the type of thing we loved to do!! Looks like a fantastic trip!!! Thanks SO much for all your visits and for your very kind words!! I truly appreciate it!!
ReplyDeletehave a great day!!!
Hugs,
Deb
It was; I just love visiting zoos and aquariums.
DeleteI love going to the zoo. It's always an adventure. Love watching the animals and people watching too. Feeding the giraffes is fun! Love the red panda. Fun post!
ReplyDeleteThanks! We had never fed giraffes before and were so excited to finally have our chance.
DeleteSnow leopards are always my favorites at the zoo!!! That Panda sure looked likeher or she had a rough day - LOL!!!! Thanks for sharing - hugs!
ReplyDeleteYeah, he/she seemed quite tired. The snow leopards were quite feisty though.
DeleteLove going to the zoo. This post reminds me that I need to go see our zoo's latest updates.
ReplyDeleteStopping by from the link up: http://www.bluesfansforever.blogspot.com
Yeah, it's always neat to see what the zoos are up to.
DeleteYou know, I'm not sure I've ever seen a red panda, live or even in pictures. I think if my local zoo had one that I'd swing by to see him/her several times during a visit. I particularly like the picture of him/her lying with its arm and part of its head over the edge. LOL!
ReplyDeleteThey are so adorable and they're quite active too so they're fun to watch. This guy (or girl) was eating, walking, and putting on quite a show.
DeleteWe made a birthday trip one year here and it was wonderful. Southwick is closer to us but Roger Williams is much bigger and has more to see.
ReplyDeleteYeah, we're about equally far away from both zoos and while we LOVE Southwick's Roger Williams does seem to have a larger variety of animals.
DeleteWhat a lovely trip to the zoo. I love taking mine to the zoo and seeing all the adorable animals :) Thanks for sharing at Welcome To The #Weekendbloghop
ReplyDeleteYeah I'm a sucker for cute animals too.
DeleteThank you! I'll do my best to stop by tomorrow morning & see (and link up a few new ones too).
