Homeschooling Through the Alphabet: S is for Simple
Once again I found myself with so many words that would have been great for the letter s. I finally settled on simple because it applies so much to our lives and our homeschooling philosophy.
One of the main goals I had set for our family when we started homeschooling was to simplify our life.
We wanted to live a more simple and slow lifestyle without all the running around to a million different activities all week long. We wanted to be more intentional about spending time together as a family.
We wanted to focus on simple pleasures like family meal times, enjoying nature and the beauty of the world around us, and finding joy in the everyday. There is much wonder to be had in this world if we remember to slow down and enjoy it.
That simple lifestyle quickly leaked over into our homeschooling and we started to focus on just a few basics of learning. Simplifying our subject materials and enjoying our educational journey became our focus.
We knew that we needed to cover the fundamentals like math, reading, spelling, etc. and we wanted to sprinkle in extra subjects as we had time for them and an interest in them. Our lessons are kept short and sweet and our school work lasts no more than a couple of hours each day leaving us plenty of time to enjoy other pursuits; fishing, swimming, field trips, science experiments, visiting family and friends, etc.

DeleteSimple sounds so wonderful. Maybe next year. :)
ReplyDeleteLOL! It never sounds or seems simple when we're doing it and I have to hold myself back from trying to do more each day.
DeleteI agree. Simple is a good option. It leaves time to explore and enjoy. The trouble is that the allure of extras and complications are always calling me. :)
ReplyDeleteOh me too!!

DeleteI love this! I love your way of thinking. This is what I want, but I struggle with it so much. It just seems like so much life gets in the way. But our day is so much happier and productive when we can take on the simple approach! Thank you for your words of wisdom!
