My October Reading List

I've had some pretty great books to read this month.  I found a few new authors to try and some "new to me" books from some of my favorite authors.  I either get books through the local library, inter-library loan, or for free on my Kindle. 



The Island House by Nancy Thayer-- Of course this book takes place on the island of Nantucket.  It follows one family and all of their friends through a pivotal summer that changes all of their lives.  I just love how deeply all the family relationships are outlined and the way they always ban together during tough times.


A Bend in The Road by Nicholas Sparks-- When one deputy finally puts his life back together after tragically loosing his wife in a hit and run it all threatens to fall apart as evidence arises pointing to his wife's killer.

While I'm Falling by Laura Moriarty-- One young struggling college student finds that her family is not always able to bail her out.  The year her parents go through their divorce is a particularly trying year for her and she finds that she often has to help them up and out rather than relying on them to always help her.   A story of an entire family trying to find their way and forge their own path in life while still hanging on to each other.


Flight Patterns by Karen White-- A family life shrouded by secrets starts to unravel with the introduction of a porcelain plate.  When Georgia is forced to go back home and face her family all in the name of tracing a rare porcelain plate family secrets are revealed that threaten to put an even bigger rift into the relationships of one volatile family.


Two by Two by Nicholas Sparks-- When one man's life is thrown into chaos he's left pondering his daughter's favorite book Tow by Two.  He learns that he's stronger than he thought and that friends crop up when you need them most.  I just loved this heartwarming story of one man's struggle to become a dad, build a business and balance his expectations with his wife's.


Rushing Waters by Danielle Steel-- When a category one hurricane hits New York City the lives of 6 people are about to change forever.  The close up look at all the struggles and trials are quite heart- wrenching.

    I really enjoy reading!! My October list is a little scarier lol. My favorite genre is horror and this is the perfect time of year for scary books. I have The Notebook on my TBR list!! #SmallVictoriesSunday

    WOW~ I have to say, I'm pretty jealous that you managed to read 6 books in October... I'm lucky if I read 6 in a year. Which is sad cus I LOVE reading. I just don't make the time to do it! thanks for linking up at share the wealth Sunday :)

      Yeah, I do read A LOT! Usually it only takes me 2-3 days to reach each book and then I have to take a break in between books to clean house and make sure my family is still around and alive ;)

    Joanne, I have always loved to read. Nicholas Sparks is one of my favorite authors. He writes such lovely stories that you wouldn't think would come from a man. I have quite a few signed first editions of his. xo

Do you remember the TGIF lineups on Friday nights? I can remember planning sleepovers and time with friends around TV Show lineups of our favorite shows... or else trying to set the VCR to record our favorite shows if we weren't going to be home. Things That Make Me Laugh

I loved the challenge of this week's list for our 26 lists link up.  I don't know about you but I really need to laugh more lately.  It's such a great stress reliever. 1.  Books-- I love a good funny book that makes me laugh out loud.  I haven't read one in a while but if you have any recommendations I'm all ears.  The last book I can remember making me laugh was the Un-Honeymooners. 2  The boys being silly. 3.  Watching shows like America's Funniest Videos or Family Feud. 4. My husband.  Most people don't realize it but he's actually pretty funny and often makes me laugh. 5.  Whenever my sisters/ family get together and we get to reminiscing (particularly if my Aunt Elaine is around) we end up laughing so hard at all the old family stories that we are all in tears by the end of the night.  It's fabulous. 6. Making Gift Card and Money Holders Using Scrapbooking and Cardmaking Supples

I don't tend to keep a lot of crafting supplies on hand so when I saw this month's de-stash challenge I wasn't sure what I was going to make.  I finally realized that with so many of my Christmas gifts being cash and gift cards this year that I needed to make up some fun paper crafting/ creative ways to gift them.   I still want my nieces and nephews to have something to open so I pulled out my papers and stamps and made up some cute little money/gift card holders. They were much easier to make than I thought.  The first one I worked on was to hold some oversized Nintendo gift cards.  I made a standard sized card and folded down one corner of the card front.  Then I ran my double sided tape along the bottom an 1/2 way up the side creating a cute little pocket.  Finally I added some cute embellishments and ribbons.   Voila! Dollar Store Candy Cane Wreath

Making a Sugar Cookie "Gingerbread" House

 Alec really wanted to try making his own gingerbread house this year without using a premade kit.  We talked about how we never really eat the house since they don't taste very good.  Years ago we gave up on the frosting that comes in the kit and began making our own so we thought perhaps we should try making our our house too. Only problem is that no one in the house likes gingerbread.  We talked about trying to make the house using a sugar cookie recipe.  Alec was so excited at that idea since he just LOVES sugar cookies.   He found a recipe online for a simple sugar cookie recipe and mixed up the dough.  He rolled it out an cut it to the size of our cookie sheets-- we had read that it's easiest to cut the house pieces out after the dough has been baked and is still warm and soft because then you don't have to worry about any of the pieces losing their shape while baking.
