Books About Antarctica for Kids

My youngest son has been comparing the arctic to the Antarctic as part of his geography study this past month.  In studying the Antarctic we found several great books; most of them about Penguins.  We've learned about this land of ice and it's inhabitants.  There are so many wonderful books out there to choose from!  We found everything from biographies to poetry to fun fictional books and our list is a good round up of them all.

(You can read all about the books we chose for studying the Arctic here.)

1.  A Mother's Journey-- We just love books by Sandra Markle.  They combine wonderful stories with beautiful illustrations and lots of facts. This book talks about the journey of the emperor penguin.

2. The Emperor's Egg-- This book is all about the life cycle of the emperor penguin.  Filled with many answers to all the "why" questions kids like to ask.

3.  Here is Antarctica -- We love this entire series and the Antarctica book is no exception. Combining beautiful paintings and a lyrical, predictable, verse this story is great for showing the food web of Antarctica.

4.  Antarctica-- This book is beautifully illustrated and deals with the arrival of man in a delicate ecosystem.

5.  Antarctica (Rookie Read- About Geography)-- We enjoy these rookie readers a lot and this book has simple sentences about life in Antarctica mixed with wonderful photographs and maps.

6. When the Sun Shines on Antarctica-- It was quite refreshing to find a wonderful book of poetry written about the icy continent!  Each poem was paired with some facts about Antarctica and wonderful illustrations.

7.    Can You Survive Antarctica? (an Interactive Survival Adventure)-- We've just discovered this series of books and my boys were really intrigued with the idea of choosing their own way while reading.  This book focuses on survival in Antarctica and with so many choices to try you can read it over and over and never have the same story twice.

8.  Eve of the Emperor Penguin (and the Fact Tracker that goes with it)-- We love the Magic Tree House series and this book is set in Antarctica.  Jack and Annie must help Merlin find the secrets of happiness and find themselves living on a science base in Antarctica.

9.  Ann and Liv Cross Antarctica-- The true story of two women and how they crossed the antarctic.  The book goes through how they trained, what they ate, and what they saw.

10.  Learning about Antarctica-- This easy to read book covers lots of different facts about Antarctica with short, descriptive paragraphs, illustrations and photographs.

  4. For older kids, Madeleine L'Engle has written a work of fiction set in Antarctica in which she shares a bit of the political disposition of the land's use, which I thought was fascinating! It's called Troubling a Star.
