Animal Antics at the Zoo

We had a great time at the zoo on Monday.  The weather was perfect; sunny and warm enough that we were able to leave winter coats at home.  The animals were out and about and the boys had fun with them!

We actually got to play with several animals through the glass of their enclosures and we had a great time watching the animal antics at the zoo.  


It was so nice to go on a field trip again.  It feels like it's been ages!

We watched the zebras and wildebeests; reading about Africa 

The cheetahs were new animals this year! 

We joked that they liked Alec's hat because once we got up to the window
they started pacing right up to us and in front of us! 

The wild dog was sleeping until we showed up and Ian
started howling.  Then he woke up and walked over to get a
drink.

We stopped for a snack break while watching the Lesser pandas

The snow leopard was right next to the gate and he sure kept his eye on us 

There were all sorts of birds around at lunch time!
Signs of spring!! 

This white handed gibbon was very interested in what
the boys had in their bags.  He kept tilting his head
to look inside. 

This bird was flying back and forth from one stick to another;
his wings are HUGE! 

Wallaby! 

The boy had the best time with the otters in their new enclosure.
They were chasing the boys stuffed animals back and forth in
front of the window; popping up on two feet every now and then. 

When Alec sat down with his back to them
they started swimming all around him and it
felt like they were trying to peek over his shoulders!
The bintergons were out for once!  Asleep; but out! 

Peacock; we were able to walk right up to it!

We spent some time watching the tree kangaroo 

These flamingos were fighting and squawking; making quite a racket 

Alec found a huge seed pod and wanted to
see what was inside 

The harbor seals were sunning themselves today

We watched them eating and using their trunks for quite some time

    We went to the zoo this week too. It is so much fun to watch the animals play.

      It really is. As often as we go we always see something new and unusual from one of the animals or else we get to hear a "new" animal making noise that has always been quiet.

      That's what I always say. My boys love zoos and we like to check out different ones when we're on vacation but my husband does not understand... he always says if you've seen one you've seen them all but my boys are quick to point out all the different animals each zoo has.

    I need to get to the zoo again asap! I love how the animals will follow bright colors like the hat, and we like to show the penguins things because they will follow them up and down like the otters were doing! #ExplorerKids

Do you remember the TGIF lineups on Friday nights? Things That Make Me Laugh

I loved the challenge of this week's list for our 26 lists link up.  I don't know about you but I really need to laugh more lately.  It's such a great stress reliever. 1.  Books-- I love a good funny book that makes me laugh out loud.  I haven't read one in a while but if you have any recommendations I'm all ears.  The last book I can remember making me laugh was the Un-Honeymooners. 2  The boys being silly. 3.  Watching shows like America's Funniest Videos or Family Feud. 4. My husband.  Most people don't realize it but he's actually pretty funny and often makes me laugh. 5.  Whenever my sisters/ family get together and we get to reminiscing (particularly if my Aunt Elaine is around) we end up laughing so hard at all the old family stories that we are all in tears by the end of the night.  It's fabulous. 6. Making Gift Card and Money Holders Using Scrapbooking and Cardmaking Supples

I don't tend to keep a lot of crafting supplies on hand so when I saw this month's de-stash challenge I wasn't sure what I was going to make.  I finally realized that with so many of my Christmas gifts being cash and gift cards this year that I needed to make up some fun paper crafting/ creative ways to gift them.   I still want my nieces and nephews to have something to open so I pulled out my papers and stamps and made up some cute little money/gift card holders. They were much easier to make than I thought.  The first one I worked on was to hold some oversized Nintendo gift cards.  I made a standard sized card and folded down one corner of the card front.  Then I ran my double sided tape along the bottom an 1/2 way up the side creating a cute little pocket.  Finally I added some cute embellishments and ribbons.   Voila! Dollar Store Candy Cane Wreath

Making a Sugar Cookie "Gingerbread" House

 Alec really wanted to try making his own gingerbread house this year without using a premade kit.  We talked about how we never really eat the house since they don't taste very good.  Years ago we gave up on the frosting that comes in the kit and began making our own so we thought perhaps we should try making our our house too. Only problem is that no one in the house likes gingerbread.  We talked about trying to make the house using a sugar cookie recipe.  Alec was so excited at that idea since he just LOVES sugar cookies.   He found a recipe online for a simple sugar cookie recipe and mixed up the dough.  He rolled it out an cut it to the size of our cookie sheets-- we had read that it's easiest to cut the house pieces out after the dough has been baked and is still warm and soft because then you don't have to worry about any of the pieces losing their shape while baking.
